Homosexuality is slowly becoming more acceptable in society as noted by increasingly positive attitudes. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that may affect the development of attitudes towards homosexuality. Participants included 104 adults divided into two groups, college-age (18-24) and adults (25 and older). Participants reported on their religious values, gender role beliefs, family communication, attitudes towards homosexuals, and their perceived reaction to hypothetical situations involving contact with a homosexual peer. Results indicated significant associations between religious views, traditional gender roles, and those in contact with homosexuals and their views (positive or negative) on homosexuality. Participants who did not hold traditional religious and gender role beliefs reported more positive attitudes towards homosexuals than those who held traditional beliefs.
