One of the most dramatic changes in higher education during the last 2 decades is the proliferation of service learning as part of the academic curriculum. Service learning is defined as a course-based, credit bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs, and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility. (Bringle and Hatcher 1995, 112) Successful service-learning classes establish reciprocal relationships between the campus and community, with each party giving and benefiting. Accordingly, the service activities must be relevant to both the educational goals of the course and the needs and issues of communities.
