The experiences of microstates over the past quarter-century show that they are faced with a number of constraints as well as opportunities. A high level of external dependence constrains their ability to assert their political interests. At the same time, many microstates have been able to assert their political interests with some success. This study examines the conditions that enable microstates to secure room to manoeuvre between their external dependence and pursuit of their political interests. It is argued in this thesis that the pursuit of prudent policies and the exploitation of favourable systemic conditions enhance the room to manoeuvre available to microstates. A prudent policy poses limited challenges to interests of stronger powers and carries domestic and international support.
