Diabetes mellitus is group of diseases characterized by elevated glucose concentrations resulting from insulin deficiency. A primary function of insulin, a hormone produced by the β-cells of the pancreas, is the use or storage of body fuels. In diabetes abnormalities in the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein, and fat are present.
