Antimicrobial Efficacy of Azithromycin/Dexamethasone Combination in Blepharoconjunctivitis Patients, a Phase 3 Study

1

TL;DRAbstract

Blepharoconjunctivitis is a chronic disease characterized by acute inflammatory flare-ups in the eyelid and conjunctiva. Eyelid signs include erythema and edema and conjunctival signs include redness of the bulbar and tarsal conjunctiva and occasional ocular discharge. Symptoms include lid itching, lid irritation, and ocular discomfort. If untreated, it may lead to damage to the ocular surface and adnexa. The disease appears to have an inflammatory as well as a bacterial component. This study was designed to investigate the effect of a combination product containing a broad spectrum antibiotic, azithromycin, and a potent antiinflammatory steroid, dexamethasone, on the disease. Both azithromycin (1%) and dexamethasone (01%) were incorporated into DuraSite, a polymeric drug delivery system, to form an ophthalmic formulation (AzaSite Plus). DuraSite is the vehicle for both AzaSite and Besivance, adding the lower frequency advantage to these ocular antibiotics when compared to their peers.
