Developing cultural competence as a graduate attribute at the University of Tasmania
TL;DRAbstract
To address the deficit in knowledge and understanding of Australian Indigenous histories, societies, and cultures by all Faculty of Health Science and Faculty of Education students, a cross-disciplinary project involving representatives from health disciplines, education, and Aboriginal Studies was undertaken to develop a program of cultural awareness and training for student practitioners. The program, called Footprints, is based on a graduated model to move students from cultural awareness to competence over the duration of their degree. It builds cultural competence through: (1) knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture including historical and contemporary experiences, (2) reflection on personal values and attitudes and those of the profession, and (3) development of culturally appropriate skills and strategies.
