Europe: A Return Home — or a Path into the Unknown?

The question regarding the condition of contemporary Polish people runs parallel to the view that it is simultaneously a question pertinent to the condition of national awareness, of the image of our own society and of our country. The answer is usually formulated with relation to the basis of the social aspiration of the Polish people. That basis (just like for other inhabitants of our region) had always been “Europe” in various shapes and colors. To define the standard patterns of those aspirations, and in order to define the general direction, proximity, or distance of the standards, may create a sense of absurdity of one’s existence in the “here and now”. Looking at the European tradition of how “Europe” had been defined makes it possible to identify three tendencies within it.
