TL;DRAbstract

Carotenoids are a large class of natural compounds characterized by a wide spectrum of biological effects, one of which is the ability to influence the immune system. In recent years, research in the field of molecular biology revealed complicated mechanisms of interrelation of carotenoids and cell systems, which underlie their impact on human immunity system. The ability of carotenoids to influence both humoral immunity and cell immunity opens prospects of using these agents in the therapy of a wide range of diseases such as cancer, infectious diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, inflammatory processes, cardiovascular pathology, etc. The latest investigations of the role of carotenoids in the regulation of genes, apoptosis, and angiogenesis reveal some possible mechanisms of immunity system regulation. The review summarizes results of research works in this field and considers mechanisms of the impact of carotenoids on the human immunity system.
