Variation of dietary lysine:arginine ratio does not affect cholesterol biosynthesis in hypercholesterolemic individuals

TL;DRAbstract

It has been suggested that the low lysine:arginine (L:A) ratio of plant protein sources confers cardio‐protective benefits by lowering circulating cholesterol concentrations, modulating cholesterol kinetics and endothelial function via the L‐Arg‐NO pathway . However, the evidence supporting lipid modulation by altering the amino acid profile of the diet is indirect and has not been consistently demonstrated in humans. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine whether varying the dietary L:A ratio modifies cholesterol kinetics in hypercholesterolemic individuals. Subjects (n=14) were fed a high L:A (L:A = 0.7; mostly vegetable protein‐based) or low L:A (L:A = 1.4; mostly animal protein‐based) diet for 5 weeks, in a randomized crossover design at the HNRCA at Tufts University.
