Three-layers DOI block detectors using GSO with different Ce concentration for small animal PET

1698 Objectives: GSO(Ce) has a unique property that the decay time can be controlled by the Ce concentration. The author already showed the possibility evaluation for the development of 3 to 4 layers depth-of-interaction (DOI) detectors using GSO for PET. This time, 3-layers GSO block detectors were developed and tested for a small animal PET. Methods: The 3-layers DOI GSO block detectors used three types of GSOs, 1.5 mol% (decay time of approximately 35ns, cell size: 1.9mmx1.9mmx6mm), lower side of the 0.5 mol% ingot (~50ns, cell size: 1.9mmx1.9mmx7mm), 0.4 mol% (~65ns, cell size: 1.9mmx1.9mmx8mm) optically coupled in the DOI direction. These scintillators were arranged into 22x22 matrix to form a block (block size: 44mmx44mmx15mm) and optically coupled to a plat panel photo-multiplier tube (FP-PMT: Hamamatsu H-8500). Pulse height, pulse shape, and position map were measured for Cs-137 gamma source (662-keV). Several DOI-GSO block detectors were tested. Electronics for gain variation
