The period covered by this thesis dates from the discovery and first settlement of the Ipswich district in 187 to the time of the mid-1870's. It was in this early period that Ipswich exerted a great deal of influence on colonial affairs, and often, by successful political manoeuvres, was able to enhance the economic and social well-being of the town.
