Most readers of Herodotus' work call it History, or the Histories . Any attempt to understand Herodotus' notion of 'history' must start from Herodotus' own use of the term historie in the Proem. Herodotus' Proem, then, displays a curious mixture of old and new. Histories apodexis is usually rendered with such expressions as 'publication of research' or 'public exposition of an inquiry'. The Herodotus that emerges from the discussion of historie and apodexis is neither an oral storyteller nor an accomplished modern scientist. Herodotus, more involved in the actual process of historiē and intent on showing it in practice, asks his future audiences to be more involved as well. We are also asked to do what Herodotus did with the monuments and megala erga he encountered: to record. This volume is among the many proofs that Herodotus achieved what he aspired to.
