TL;DRAbstract

Cancer of the head and neck (HNSCC) is a major, life-threatening tumouraffecting basic survival functions such as breathing and swallowing. It is painfuland despite debilitating surgical and radiological intervention often ends in deathwithin two years of diagnosis. Even though tobacco and alcohol abuse are said to bethe main causative factors, little is known about its aetiology, natural history andoptimal therapeutic management. The overall five year survival is less than twentypercent.Gene expression profiling has provided many insights into tumorprogression but validation at the protein level and translation to clinical practice asprognostic and diagnostic markers has been limited. The aim of this project was toidentify significant changes in gene expression in HNSCC that can be translatedinto clinical practice and to provide a platform for studying the pathways forHNSCC formation, growth (tumorigenesis) and spreading (metastasis). A panel of19,000 genes was assayed by cDNA gene ex
