Oral history of Dan Nguyen, born in 1948, who has used many different aliases due to the necessity of evading the communist regime after 1975. He was born in Hanoi, Vietnam, but his family migrated to Da Lat after the 1954 Geneva Accords. He comes from a large family of 7 siblings. His family descended from the Nguyen-Dinh clan, a martial arts family working for the imperial court of the last dynasty in Vietnam. He was drafted into the Army of the Republic of Vietnam and then sent to reeducation camp after 1975. After getting out of reeducation camp, he attempted to leave Vietnam by boat many times but would be caught and imprisoned each time. His successful escape happened in 1984 and he passed through a refugee camp for 10 months before resettling in the U.S. He came with only his young daughter and raised her on his own, working odd jobs. At the time of interview, he is a home health nurse.
