Two archaeological interventions that took place in a «sauvetages programmés » (planned rescue) framework, have provided an opportunity to clarify the layouts of the Cistercian Abbeys of Thoronet (Var) and Silvacane (Bouches-du-Rhône). In both cases, buildings used for hospitable or charitable functions were brought to light, the identification of which was made easier for the latter, by an inventory dating to the late thirteenth century. These discoveries confirm that a Cistercian establishment was likely to welcome travellers, according to the tradition of monastic hospitality. In both cases once again, the excavation showed that in the early period following their foundation, the monastries aimed at an economic autarky : traces of small scale metallurgical production are explicit, at the Thoronet Abbey. Despite the mediocracy of the installation, the slag and production waste prove that a certain know-how was necessary in order to obtain a metal from bauxite, an ore difficult to exp
