An Analysis of Dilbert Cartoon Strips in Kompas Newspaper: Pragmatic Approach

TL;DRAbstract

This research paper is mainly intended to find out the type of speech acts in Dilbert cartoon strips and to describe the speaker intention of Dilbert cartoon strips. The data are derived from the utterances on Dilbert Cartoon strips in Kompas Newspaper issued July – September 2008. The data were collected by documenting in Kompas Newspaper. There are two techniques in collecting the data. Firstly, describing the type of speech act by referring to the theory of Searle. Secondly, describing the intention by using the speech act theory. The study shows that there are (1) five types of speech acts based on Searle’s theory. They are (a) representatives, (b) declarations, (c) directives, (d) commissives and, (e) expressives. (2) The speech level is (a) locutionary, (b) illocutionary and, (c) some of the data indicate perlocutionary. The data also figure out new findings.
