Abstract The Church of God and Saints of Christ (CGSC) is an African-American denomination with local churches in several North American cities. This article examines the CGSC’s music pedagogy and the extent to which this technique is context or culture-specific. The system of musical training in the CGSC appears to be based on the premise that everyone has musical potential and is therefore to be part of the musical community. No one is excluded from musical activities, not the “tone-deaf child,” not the person with mental or physical challenges, nor the person with an aversion to performing. Children participate freely and without inhibitions because they are encouraged to and because there are no judgments about quality.
