TL;DRAbstract
Male genital organs, such as testis and prostate are susceptible to acute and chronic cadmium insult, resulting in necrotic changes in germ cells and tumorigenesis, respectively (1). It was proposed that the susceptibility was probably due to an apparent lack of MT in these organs [2]. Since the male genital organs, testis, prostate and other auxiliary organs consist of het-erogenous types of cells, we thought that it would be important to identify what kind of cells harbor or induce MTs, and studied localization of MT mRNA and protein in these tissues. Next, we studied whether and/or how testosterone affects the induction of metallothionein in the above male genital organs. Finally, we sequenced RT-PCR products obtained from the rat testicular RNA and also purified and isolated Cd-binding proteins from the rat testis, and showed that MT-I and II exist in this organ.
