V. E. Shelford-1923-02-28-Illinois Natural History Survey bulletin/Bulletin - Illinois Natural History Survey
14PDF

TL;DRAbstract

It is accordingly the purpose of this paper to show ( 1) that hydrogen ion concentration is one of the factors governing the movement and distribution of fishes, its importance on the whole probablyequaling that of well-known factors; (2) that breeding places of fish are characteri2ed by differences in hydrogen ion concentration; (3) that hydrogen ion concentration has marked influence on the survival of fishes under adverse conditions.
