Cropping systems options in relation to ENSO phase for Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh - a simulation analysis
TL;DRAbstract
In rainfed environments, the productivity of cropping systems is primarily determined by the amount and distribution of rainfall. In southern India, the ENSO condition to some degree determines the potential of the ensuing rainy season in terms of amount of summer monsoon rainfall that is likely to be received in the region. Although it is difficult to predict the distribution of rainfall at a site or region, the prediction of rainfall amount would help farmers to plan cropping strategies to minimize climatic risks to crop production. Using crop simulation models and long-term weather records (1961 to 2006), productivity and net income of three sequential cropping systems (maize-chickpea, soybean-chickpea and groundnut-chickpea) and three intercrop systems (maize/pigeonpea, soybean/pigeonpea and groundnut/pigeonpea) were evaluated for the three ENSO conditions for Nandyal situated in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. The simulation analysis showed that groundnut-chickpea sequenti
