TL;DRAbstract

This paper examines the effect of fuel price change on public transit ridership in Stockholm’s county during the period 2007-2014. Data are collected at monthly intervals and are analysed using multiple regression to estimate the cross-price elasticity of demand for three modes of transit with respect to fuel price. We also estimate a model using lagged fuel price in order to test if there is an lagged effect of changes in fuel price on transit ridership. This paper finds that the cross-price elasticity is not statistically significant different from zero. Hence, changes in fuel price did not affect transit ridership in Stockholm’s county during the period 2007-2014. Additionally, this paper finds that the same conclusion is applicable for the lagged model.
