TL;DRAbstract

This thesis studies forms of militancy and claims for legitimacy advanced by desocupados' (unemployed workers') movements (MTD). It compares the militants' and the non-militants' trajectories observed in the same social milieu. It analyzes two organisations situated in the cities of Berisso and Berazategui between 2003 and 2007. From an ethnographic standpoint, the thesis explores the relationships established between members and non-members, in particular, links between families, acquaintances and vecinos (neighbors). Commitment to and withdrawal from the cause can shift depending on the division of labor inside families and the way social, economic, private and public responsibilities are distributed. The analysis not only focuses on the movement as political actor but also studies lifestyle and conceptions of justice. In the first section, the desocupados' political activities are shown to be interrelated to the militants' daily life experience. Through observation, militant moments
