RFI in radio astronomy band 1610.6MHz-1613.8MHz at Bleien observatory
TL;DRAbstract
While testing a new broadband antenna feed dedicated to solar radio astronomy in combination with a new FFT spectrometer we detected a radio frequency interference.It appeared at about 1612.46MHz in the middle of the protected radio astronomy band between 1610.6MHz and 1613.8MHz.This band is of special interest for us to observe OH molecular spectral lines in star forming regions.The interference shows up in the order of 1.67sfu or 42dBF U thus, it violates ITU-R RA.769.The signature of the signal let us assume that IRIDIUM is the primary source of the rfi due to their time signature.Observations of OH lines are no longer possible since the signal appeared in different directions where we were pointing to and at all times where we were observing.
