There is reason for concern regarding the sustainability of the international public agricultural research system. Supporters of patenting point out that patents are an important stimulus for the private sector investing large sums of money in agricultural biotechnology research and development. They also point out that patent disclosure allows for further research development. In order to ensure the sustainability of the international agricultural research system the relevant public and private sector policy makers must better understand and acknowledge the significant changes that are occurring, and that require new partnership mechanisms. It is becoming increasingly obvious that multilateral technology partnerships will be necessary to address the broader public goals of food security, environmental sustainability, and poverty alleviation.
