nMany design methods for soil-cement pavements have been developednand used by road authorities. Without exception, they are empirical andntake no account of the stresses which cause failure, or the resistancenof soil-cement to these stresses. While most of these pavements havenbeen satisfactory, some have failed in service. A rational designnmethod should reduce the number of pavements that fail.n Present design and construction methods produce soil-cement thatnusually breaks up into interlocked blocks which act as a flexiblenpavement. The writer considers the stresses and proposes that soil-cementnpavements can be constructed as finite, rigid slabs. nBoth static and fatigue stresses have been considered within thisnthesis. La bora tory specimens were studied under both types of loadingnand the results were used in the pavement design.n Near Barcaldine, in central western Queensland, a group ofnexperimental, stabilized pavements was constructed in 1962.
