The Landcare program was introduced in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa to support natural resource management and at the same time address social issues such as poverty and unemployment. The aim of this study is to address the specific problem on how to improve Landcare projects to make them more effective in achieving the goals and aspirations of those involved. Three research questions were asked to address the problem: • What critical success factors can be derived from literature that will help to improve the effectiveness of projects? • How do the current projects comply with these critical success factors? • What recommendations can be made for improvement of the current program? Three adaptive management models were consulted during the literature review to identify the critical success factors for Landcare projects.
