TL;DRAbstract

Jean-Baptiste Banks, freemason, widower of a local Bourbon woman, fell deeply in love with a slave, thus offending colonial order. We wish, on the basis of the numerous episodes involved in this affair, to reflect on the social and ideological foundations of the colonial history of Bourbon island. The Masonic approach applied here offers an original take for a detailed perception of the forces in place and the values at stake within the insular elite. It also affords renewed knowledge of colonial masonry with its deep contradictions between founding principles and a society with a slavery based economy.
