Effect of stone column on soft soil

Phua, Kenneth-2013-01-01-UPT. Syiah Kuala University Library (Syiah Kuala University)

TL;DRAbstract

This report demonstrates the results of numerical simulation studying the effect of stone columns on soft soil under an embankment at working load. Different approaches are studied using the finite element analysis program Plaxis 2D. The main challenge in this report is the simulation of the stone columns including the estimation of the smear zone around the stone columns as well as the consideration of the construction effects due to the installation of stone columns.
\nThe finite element analysis is carried out at the test embankment at Penchala Toll Plaza project. The embankment was constructed on soft soil and reinforced with stone columns. The finite element simulation of the embankment with stone column is performed to compare the settlement and rate of consolidation between the finite element analysis results and the field measurement results. Besides that, a comparison on the settlement and rate of consolidation between the hand calculation results and finite element resul
