Minimally-invasive reforestation as a model for in situ and ex situ plant conservation.

TL;DRAbstract

This paper reports progress in the reforestation project at the Obafemi Awolowo University as a case study of one site that has been planted with Elaeis guineensis at a spacing of 78 m x 39 m and managed under the minimally-invasive strategy for three years. A total enumeration of site shows that there are 54 species in 19 families in site JSQ1 that is about 2.5ha. The tree species are mainly saplings and seed recruitment is rather low as a result of perennial farming activities on the site. The cover in site JSQ1 is only 31% indicating that the land can still be seeded with desired plants to improve its species diversity, richness and abundance. An activity chart detailing the major elements of the minimally-invasive strategy, its dynamics and mechanisms has been produced. Introduction Wild genetic resources provide food, fodder, fuel-wood, fibre, oils, medicinals and materials for cultural use. The global concern for the protection of the environment arose in the 1960s and the early
