In his preface to first edition of Iliad (1791), William Cowper claimed that is indeed of very essence of translation, and term itself implies it.1 Wilhelm von Humboldt, inspired by Johann Voss' translation of Homer's Odyssey, postulated in his introduction to Agamemnon of Aeschylus (1816) that first requirement of translation was fidelity to original and that translator's task was to strive for simplicity and faithfulness.2 Similarly, John Postgate in his Translation and Translations; Theory and Practice (1922) identified faithfulness as the prime merit of a translation proper, and he is best translator whose work is nearest to his original, as Faithful Translator will give letter where possible, but in any case spirit. The Transfuser is only too prone to sacrifice letter and spirit as well. Fidelity to original text is a relatively new goal of translation theory and practice.
