Notes on the Text of Pliny’s Natural History

TL;DRAbstract

The MSS tradition of the list of Boiotian toponymia in Pliny n. h. iv, 25-26 is examined, and a reconstruction of the text is suggested by subjecting the variant readings to the rule of ≪intrinsic probability≫. In the case of one reading only is radical reconstruction necessary. There appear traces of conflated Greek and Roman sources, while within the list of towns, it is possible to observe a sequence of geographical pairs. Finally a note is added on Pliny’s use of descriptive phrases and the connective in this list.
