Structural changes and problems in the rural areas in Finland
TL;DRAbstract
The strong structural change which has characterized Finnish society during the past decade has been especially unfavorable for the rural population. The article is concerned with the structural changes within the population in the depopulated areas in the period 1950-1980. The main subjects are the changes in age and sex structure and labor force caused by migration. The societal effects of the changes are discussed. It is shown that the outflux of the young active population weakens the basic conditions of economic activity raises the price of health care and social welfare hinders reproduction and the ensurement of successors and decreases the political power of the depopulated areas.
