0

TL;DRAbstract

In 1988, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) responded to the needs of the transit community for increased security within the public transportation system. The DART Police Department was established in 1989. DART police officers patrol buses and bus routes, trains and rail corridors including commuter rail, light rail, the transit mall, and subways by vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle, and foot patrol. The Transit Police use deployment strategies that provide a highly visible police presence as a proactive means to deter criminal and disruptive behavior. Officers are trained to practice the community-oriented policing concept, are service oriented, and focus on courtesy, assistance, and conflict resolution. This conference paper provides a detailed look at the DART Police Department and their efforts to provide a safer commuting environment for the city of Dallas.
