What economic impact has the West Quay development had on Southampton?

TL;DRAbstract

The West Quay shopping centre was constructed under the new wave of inner-city major retail developments for the purpose to regenerate the existing retail district, in this case Southampton City. The purpose of this paper is to examine the economic significance of West Quay in 2007 on the exiting retail district in Southampton City. The paper will explore, with the use of extensive literate, the historical argument since the end of Second World War II whereby a trend of government polices have protected and subsequently regenerated existing retail districts in protection of out-of-town retail development threats. Consequently the paper, with use of primary fieldwork and secondary data, will examine what impact West Quay has had since its opening on September 2000, on the existing city centre and in turn the region of Hampshire.
