Abstract The purpose of this article is to review the current status of impression management (IM) research in employment interviews and to stimulate future research. As employment interviews generally have both selection and recruitment purposes, we include IM studies from both selection and recruitment literature to illustrate the role of IM in employment interview contexts. Two major types of IM research, one focusing on building positive identities (assertive IM) and the other focusing on repairing damaged images (defensive IM), are reviewed here. Among the proposed four types of IM research (i.e., selection-assertive, selection-defensive, recruitment-assertive, & recruitment-defensive), we review existing research evidence and discuss directions for future research. At the end of this article, we offer some overarching recommendations for general issues concerning the role of IM in employment interviews.
