Sources of organic matter in coastal areas can be both autochthonous (phytoplankton) and allochthonous (river inflow, groundwater, atmospheric deposition). The great variability in the structure and composition of this organic matter creates different ecological niches that favor increased microbial diversity in the system. Blanes Bay, where the study area is located, is considered a good example of oligotrophic coastal ecosystem that is also relatively little affected by human influence.
