The object of this essay is to explore a dilemma which is, I believe, of growing interest, the dilemma facing a group of men and women possessing a professional responsibility within society who wish, at one and the same time, to express a professional interest and a trade union interest. There are some, no doubt, who would be prepared to say that there is a sense in which these things coincide; generally however it is recognised, not without a great deal of uneasiness, that there are important — and numerous — occasions when this is not
