TL;DRAbstract

Mydriatics are used daily in canine ophtalmology. This experimental study aimed at evaluating the pharmacological and ocular effects of a human-used ophthalmic insert containing tropicamide and phenylephrine (Mydriasert®) on healthy dogs. In a first series, the mydriasis obtained with Mydriasert® was compared to that obtained with the combination of tropicamide and phenylephrine in eye drops. During this operation the local tolerance was also evaluated. In a second series, the analysis focused on the effects of Mydriasert® applied for 120 minutes on intraocular pressure and tear secretion. Finally, changes in pupil size with different application time of Mydriasert® (15, 30 and 45 minutes) were compared. The results show that the use of Mydriasert® on healthy dogs provides mydriasis at least equivalent to that obtained with the combination of tropicamide and neosynephrine in eye drops. No major parallel ocular effects have been identified, with the exception of a moderate increase in i
