Effects of emotion-oriented care in homes for the elderly

TL;DRAbstract

This literature review reports on the effectiveness of validation, an approach used in the care for disoriented elderly people Various (computerized) data-sets and sources were used to search for relevant studies. This resulted in 16 studies of which seven were unpublished. The sixteen studies used various designs: only three studies are randomized controlled trials (RCTs) Nearly all studies suffer from serious methodological shortcomings and the results are conflicting. It appears that the better the study, the less favorable the effectiveness of validation is. In view of the conflicting results and the poor methodological quality of the majority of the studies, we conclude that there is insufficient evidence yet for the effectiveness of validation on disoriented elderiy and their caregivers.
