DEVELOPMENT OF A.R.F. (ANTI-ROLLING FOIL) FOR SHIP OSCILLATION IN WAVES

0

TL;DRAbstract

It is important to reduce the oscillation of ships at stopping/dead-slow speed especially in stormy or rough sea states in order to prevent seasickness. A new type of device (Anti-Rolling Foil) for the reduction of ship oscillation has been developed and is light enough and compact to be installed on a small ship such as working vessel. This paper reports the concept of the device and its characteristics obtained from an experimental study. This device features an oscillating hydrofoil, the foil motion of which gives significant resistance against oscillation (especially against ship rolling) and also gives effective thrust for the turn of the bow so that the ship can face an incidental wave when the device is installed in the stern.
