21. Effects of Chemical Growth Substances on the Bending of Flower Stalks in Papaver

Tomota Sugawara-1942-01-01-Proceedings of the Imperial Academy

TL;DRAbstract

(1) Five chemical growth substances used in this experiment were indole-acetic acid, indole-butyric acid, indole propionic acid, α-naphthalene-acetic acid and β-naphthalene-acetic acid. Lanolin paste of these growth substances were applied locally by means of rubbing it on flower stalks with a glass rod. (2) The growing flower stalks of Papaver were treated with lanolin paste of growth substances and they were collected at definite intervals, for observation of external form and internal structure. (3) The general results of treatment were negative or positive ending and swelling, which will largely depend on the age of peduncle, and kinds as well as concentrations of chemical substances. (4) The indole-acetic acid was more effective than the other indole and naphthalene derivatives for the bending and swelling of flower stalks. (5) Sensitivity of peduncles for the action of growth substance differs in different age: though they are very sensitive before opening of the buds older pedun
