This work is dedicated to the nearly two thousand study participants who generously shared their time and perspectives. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Although this dissertation is an early iteration of what I hope will become a more refined and complete work, it nevertheless represents a satisfying endpoint of more than four years of research and writing. Among them, Nancy Krumel came to know most about the richness of my field research.
