Effects of prefabricated vertical drain on embankment constructed on soft ground

Kho, Desmond-2013-01-01-UPT. Syiah Kuala University Library (Syiah Kuala University)

TL;DRAbstract

Precompression with vertical drain was used as the ground treatment method for a road construction project located at Perak, Malaysia. This project involves the prediction of settlement of the road embankment on soft ground treated with prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) by finite element method. The embankment was modeled using finite element code PLAXIS v2012 for two cases; with and without PVD. The equivalent vertical permeability method was used in the analysis to simulate the soft soil layer treated with PVD. The effect of smear was studied for the case of PVD treated ground by applying different values of k_h⁄k_s ranging from 2 to 10. Besides, study to investigate the effect of drain spacing had also been conducted. The predicted settlement was compared with hand calculation method and field measurement data. The results showed that the installation of PVD improves the rate of settlement and the dissipation of pore pressure. The trend shown by the results of the finite element m
