TL;DRAbstract

Is Australia a multicultural country? This might seem a strange question given that Australia is widely known internationally as a successful example of multiculturalism, it has defined itself as multicultural since the mid-1970s, it has multicultural programs in place in all states, in schools and community organisations across the country, and we know that Australia has one of the highest percentage of immigrants - of overseas born - in its permanent resident population, second only to Israel, higher than the USA or Canada for example. And we know that Australians love multicultural festivals and "ethnic" restaurants!
