TL;DRAbstract

This chapter takes an optimistic view of the future role of genomic technology in the right to health. It first discusses the early expectations of genomic technologies for advancing health outcomes, and the limited extent to which these expectations have thus far been fulfilled. It then considers the multifaceted implications of genomic technologies for developing countries, recognizing the overwhelming challenges of implementation but also the potential value of genomics. It concludes with an analysis of two case studies: the use of genomics as a tool to improve HIV treatment, and ongoing efforts to apply pharmacogenomics to the global cardiovascular disease (CVD) epidemic.
