TL;DRAbstract

Introduction: To control acute dental pain, a common oral health symptom, there is consensus to about using alternative therapies such as acupuncture in pre-dental care.Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of acupuncture in reducing the intensity of acute pain of dental origin in pre-dental care in patients awaiting treatment in emergency dental care centers.Methods: This clinical study was conducted at After-Hours Emergency Dental Center of Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas and at the Emergency Center Dental Specialties I in Piracicaba (São Paulo).The sample consisted of 120 patients.Pain intensity was measured by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).All patients underwent one session of acupuncture, the selected points were IG4, E44 and HP8, used alone or combined.Results: When considering the points used, with only one point, the VAS was zero in 24.17% of patients (n = 29), with the combination of a two point 35.83% (n = 43), in association with three
