TL;DRAbstract
The Payments for Hydrological Ecosystem Services (PHES) concept has become a popular tool within integrated water resource management in several Central American countries. Costa Rica and Mexico have introduced it as a national strategy to efficiently conserve their natural resources. In other neighboring countries the concept prevails as regional or even local measure at basin or catchment scale. But the differences in the application of the PHES conceps are not limited to their spatial extent, stakeholder involvement and institutional organization vary as well from case to case. This contribution intents to draw a clearer picture on decisive factor of success in including the valuation of hydrological services in natural resource management in Central America.
