Cation Isotope Effect in SZILARD-CHALMERS Process

T. Andersen,A. G. Maddock-1963-08-01-Radiochimica Acta

TL;DRAbstract

An investigation of the influence of the mass of the cation was made using electromagnetically enriched isotopes of Mg and Zn, in an attempt to discover some of the factors determining the retention, after neutron irradiation of solid substances. The results indicated a small but measurable effect of the mass of the cation. The compound containing the heavier isotope always showed the lower retention. The retention of normal MgCrO/sub 4/ (79% Mg/sup 24/, 10% Mg/sup 25/, 11% Mg/sup 26/ was 55.8% plus or minus 0.4% in agreement with the retention calculated from the results for the enriched MgCrO/sub 4/ samples and the known isotopic composition of the element.
