Potencjał demograficzny krajów kandydujących do Unii Europejskiej

Elżbieta Sojka-2012-07-30-Wiadomości Statystyczne The Polish Statistician

TL;DRAbstract

The purpose of the article is to analyse demographic potential of the countries that have applied for the membership in the European Union. The study involved eight countries including Croatia, Turkey, Iceland, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Serbia as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first five states have already got the official status of the EU candidate country. Favourable population age structure and relatively high number of children born per woman, that are still observed in these countries, determine a significant demographic potential of these countries that they can bring to the EU after their accession. Decrease in infant mortality rate and extension of the life expectancy illustrate positive changes that have been noted in these countries for the last several years.
