Introduction to Interviews with Bei Dao and Rita Dove

TL;DRAbstract

My interviews with Rita Dove and Bei Dao stem from a series I did for the Christian Science Monitor beginning in the early 1990s. As those were published in severely edited forms to accommodate the space requirements of a daily newspaper, I've gone back now to the ori ginal transcripts and restored to each interview all of what seemed most relevant. The complete collection of conversations will be published in autumn 2002 by the University of Massachusetts Press under the title Giving Their Word. Starting out, I had envisioned an open-ended series of conversa tions featuring both the prominent names in contemporary writing as well as emerging talents. My intention was to explore some of the en during themes within each poet's work and to make the connection between a poet's creation and the daily lives of all readers, not just the small percentage who were brave enough to visit the poetry section of their local book shop.
